‘Breaking out’ was created as a final project for my Painting II class at Nova Southeastern University.
This self-portrait painting was done on hardboard with carvings. The tranquility of the beach is conflicting with the hardships that the person is trying to break free from. Surrounding her are textured patches resembling torn materials, subtly representing the barriers or challenges she faces. The combination of organic and abstract elements invites contemplation about identity, self-discovery, and the layers of human experience. This piece might be interpreted as a meditation on the duality of vulnerability and strength, exploring the idea of revealing one’s true self while being shielded by external influences.
Showcased in “Decade” 10th Annual Juried Student Exhibition at Nova Southeastern University, it was selected for the Dean’s Choice Award.
